citizenM Roma Isola Tiberina:

A Designer's Review of a Boutique Hotel in Rome

Located across from the Tiber River in the Regola neighbourhood, the citizenM Roma Isola Tiberina is a true gem. If this brand (acquired by Marriott last year) isn't on your radar yet, it should be.

The Location: Across the Tiber in Regola, an easy walk to Trastevere, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. No restaurant on-site. You won't miss it. A plethora of local places is a short stroll away, which suits this hotel perfectly. It's built for travellers who'd rather experience Rome like a local, on foot and by transit.

An eye-popping welcome featuring bursts of colour, art, and music.  Welcome to the citizenM Roma Isola Tiberina.

The Corridors:

The walk to your room is half the experience. Pop art murals and farcical faces grab you the moment you turn the corner, and the custom corridor carpet maps the city's highlights in a vibrant satellite view. Bold?‍ ‍Very. Chaotic? No. The palette is disciplined, black, white, and red, nothing else. Restraint in colour is what lets you go big on pattern. A good lesson, frankly, for any interior.

The Guestrooms: Compact, yet memorable. citizenM is one of the few brands to bring prefabricated hotel rooms to market, and you feel the intelligence of the system. Every square inch accounted for, nothing wasted. Technology gets equal billing with design here. TV, lighting, blackout roller shades, all from the provided iPad. Affordable luxury for the people, exactly as promised, executed without apology.

The Vibe: The staff? Friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere? "Cool kids" meet "tech bros" meet your great aunt with a love of art. Eccentric, thoughtful, entirely unpretentious. Somehow it all works.

The Verdict: If you're on a budget, want to experience Rome like a local, and have an appreciation for eccentric and thoughtful design, this is a great hotel for you.

Good to know: 3-day visit, Standard King guestroom. Booked and paid independently.
